What to Expect: In a nutshell, coach volunteers are contacted several weeks before the season to attend a short coaches meeting. This meeting is administrative and Board Members will describe how the season will run, important dates, and provide a coaching "packet". Following this meeting, coaches also attend "Back to Socer Day" where coaches receive the rosters and have a chance to meet parents and players on their team. After Back to Soccer Day, coaches contact all team members, let the Rec Commissioner know when they have reached 100% and can begin practicing at least two weeks ahead of the season. Head coaches should be prepared to conduct two practices per week after 5PM minimum (M/W or T/TH) and should be available for scheduled games.
How can ASA help: New head coaches will be provided with the following training materials (to keep) based on team age:
ASA will also provide training. Two hour clinics are provided free by the Baltimore Blast, DC United, Coerver of Maryland, or the ASA Premier team club coaches. These clinics are focused on tips for running a team, getting organized, how to best run practices, and examples of drills, games and exercises. ASA will also pay for coaching licenses. For new coaches, the basic course is the Youth Module 5 hours course taught by the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA). The $35 fee is reimbursed by ASA upon successful completeion of the course. Coaches participate in training, but there are no exams. Coaches also can be reimbursed for licensing past the Youth Module level. ASA prefers ALL coaches be licensed.
Coaching Resources: ASA provides booklets and DVD's, as well as useful links to coaching websites. Contact the coaching committee to receive them. For more online resources, click here.
What is ASA looking for: Arundel Soccer is looking for our kids to have fun playing the game and learn as much as they can in both skills and teamwork. We are also looking for our coaches to get as much benefit and enjoyment from their teams as possible. To do both, ASA is promoting a "Club Coach" model where we work to have all our coaches be proficient at teaching and coaching the game, and where coaching is consistent from season to season so that children learn fundamentals by reinforcing methods as they get older. Some children play one or two seasons, or in Fall but not Spring, while others start at 4 years old and play straight on through high school and college. Consistent coaching, while still leaving plenty of room for creativity and fun, is the key for all kids in any circumstances. It is ASA's constant objective. To do this, ASA provides the materials to coaches that emphasize basic techniques that are age appropriate. We also provide the booklet of practice plans that give both general "themes" for your age group and specific sample exercises that have proven effective over the years.
Background Check Policy: Anne Arundel County Requires all coaches and anyone involved in the organization who is in contact with children to be background checked. Arundel Soccer supports this policy completely for the kids' protection. There are no exceptions.
Other Resources: The best sources are very often other coaches. A number of coaches have successfully coached recreational, county and premier teams in Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall - indoors, outdoors and sand - club games, league games, school games and tournaments. And at some point, everyone starts out as a new coach. If you would like extra help and perhaps a different perspective, ask the ASA Coaching Director, Rec Commissioner or County Commissioner about where to start.
Bottom Line: Most teams in Rec and County will need to practice twice per week and play one game per week on the weekend. With a little planning at the beginning and some preparation before practices and games, a season turns out to really take very little time and should be fun for both coaches, parents and kids.
