The Recreactional/Development Program is where all players under the age of 8 start. It runs from ages 3 through 10. It is our only co-ed program, and the focus of the program is on having fun, being active, and learning soccer skills. Players have two practices each week and a game on Saturday each weekend.

The Rec/Development program is broken into four age groups covering the age and skill levels needed to prepare players best in progression. These are: Under-4 Minis, U5/U6-Clinic, U7/U8-Juniors, and U9/U10-Seniors.

Registration is online and is open from mid-November through mid-March for Spring seasons and from June through mid-August for Fall seasons. We will accept players as long as we have room to place them.

Trainers and Coaches

All Rec/Development Program coaches are volunteers, regardless of experience. • What Section Does My Kid Go In?

When you register, your kids are automatically assigned by birthday into the divisions.

Sometimes, a child will develop physically quickly and be ready for play past his/her actual age group. In REC if you note this in special request that you’d like the child to play up into the next age group, this will be considered during the time of player placement.   If the player is to be in a league at U9 or more, you must check with the ASA Registrar first to determine eligibility rules for play up.

  • Minis (U3-U4)

The Mini-Strikers Program is for younger children ages 3 to 4 years to have fun and take the very first steps in learning soccer.

Children and parents will be involved in learning through games and activities that get kids running and active, and participating with others in an age appropriate manner.  Kids practice twice per week and play one small sided game each week to maximize their “touches” on the ball, provide the optimum number of teammates for their age, and keep them engaged and eager to play. This is not just a clinic involving a few practices.  Kids play games of soccer appropriate for their age and receive their own uniform to keep, just like their bigger siblings and neighbors.  Parents learn about what to expect from their child and how the game works.

Whether it is a simple fun thing to do, a healthy way to excercise and be social, or the start of a lifelong passion, we’re ready to play!  This is an opportunity for kids and parents to have fun together!

Space is limited and goes very quickly.  Please register early.  We try to take as many players as we can!

  • Clinic (U5-U6)

The ASA clinic division for the Rec/Development Program is for the U5/U6 aged players. We introduce players to the game of soccer based on a game structure of two 4v4 games running at the same time on adjacent fields.  The focus on technical development.  Players will practice with an emphasis on skills and having fun.  Games offer a chance to try those skills against new kids and have a great time playing.

The clinic division is for all players in the age regardless if they have played before or not.  Some adjustments can be made to account for skill level.  Players may play "up" if physically or mentally ready to change.

  • Juniors (U7-U8)

The Juniors division of the Rec Development Program is for player ages U7 and U8. Some adjustments can be made to account for player skill level. We introduce additional components of game play and skills by using a game structure of 7v7 including a keeper.  Players will practice with an emphasis on skills and having fun. Practices begin to lengthen as games offer a chance to try those skills against new kids and have a great time playing.

The Juniors division is for all players in the age regardless if they have played before or not. Play remains coed. Some coaches may elect to have all-boys or all-girls teams if the age of the team is such that it can plan on a transition into gender based leagues.

Juniors becomes the primary transition point into league teams at the end of the juniors age range. At U8, players (and coaches) may elect to move into Anne Arundel County leagues or into travel and county teams going from U8 to U9. ASA encourages experienced players to transition to leagues at the U8 and U9 ages as the juniors age concludes.

  • Seniors (U9-U10)

The ASA Seniors division for the Rec/Development Program is for the U9 and U10 aged players. The focus remains on technical development in a 7v7 format playing with keepers.  Players will practice with an emphasis on skills and having fun.  Games offer a chance to try those skills against new kids and have a great time playing.

Seniors is for newer players with limited experience and any players wishing to continue longer in Rec/Development.  The goal is to continue working skills and an enjoyment of the game, while allowing players to develop at their individual pace.
